Finding Pre-market Movers Using Chartmill

The typical pre-market session takes place before the regular market opens, from 08:00 to 09:30 EST. And even if you are not active in this session, it is sometimes still useful to keep an eye on the pre-market to spot interesting candidates.

Via the section "Pre-Market Movers (1)" you will find a summary overview of the strongest and weakest stocks for both the Nasdaq, NYSE and AMEX. You will see the pre-market price movement (2) and the corresponding volume (3).

Via the button Full List (4) you get to see the complete list of stocks that are active in the pre-market.

Via the stock screener menu in the header, you can apply additional filters on this pre-market selection. The view is by default set to 'Extended Hours' (1).

The table 'Today' (2) shows the last known closing price of the share.

You can set the pre-market change (3) so that the strongest risers are visible first or vice versa. Make sure you check the pre-market volume (4) and compare it with the average daily volume of the last 50 trading days (5). Sometimes it happens that the pre-market volume exceeds the total daily volume, indicating that the buying interest in these shares is huge.

With the action buttons (6) on the far right you can:

  • check the full profile of the stock (be sure to check the news section to see if there is a specific reason that there is pre-market interest in the stock)
  • add the share to one of your watchlists
  • Set an alarm for the share.

In this article you can find some more information and predefined filters and there is also a 'Pre-market Stock Gainers' video available.
